Connect PC to PC
Alan , United Kingdom
I want to know how to connect my PC to my friend’s PC, who lives around 4 Km away from my home. We both have telephone and modems, and do not want to buy any extra hardware. We both run Windows XP. Can we do this?
Sure you can. Just go to
Start > Programs > Accessories > Communication > Hyper Terminal
on both PCs. Now either you or your friend can call each other using your modems, and transfer data just as if you were on a network.
I can’t connect the FTP
Helena bermi , Albania
I have Internet connection with dial-up. I have P-III machine with Windows XP Pro version. The problem is that I am not able to run the FTP command at the DOS prompt mode. The message I keep getting is “FTP is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.” how do I get the command FTP to run at DOS prompt, so that I can send or receive file from my Internet FTP.
The FTP commands requires that either the file FTP.EXE be present in the folder from where the command is run or that the path to that file is present in the PATH environment variable. FTP.EXE is installed by default with every Windows XP installation to the System32 folder in the windows directory. The reason for the FTP command not working on your computer could be due to this file being corrupt or the file from any Windows XP PC from the location mentioned earlier to the System32 directory of your machine, and FTP command will start working again
How can I enable .AVI files after disable
X-sol lab
I have Windows XP SP2 installed on my computer. I had installed AutoPatcher and it’s disabled previewing of .AVI files. Please tell me how can I enable this again. When I turn on my PC, a warning displayed that reads: “Your Firewall is turned OFF”. When I try to turn it “ON”, an error message is displayed, “ Cannot turn ON Firewall”.
In order to enable the preview of AVI files in Window Explorer, open registry editor. Click RUN from START, and then type regedit. Navigate to the following branches,
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.avi\ShellEx.
Right-click in the right pane and select
NEW>Key
. Name this key as
{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}
. Include the brackets too.
Next, double-click in the default string inside this key and set its value to
{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}
. Again, you must include the brackets. After you log off and log on again, the AVI preview in Windows Explorer will be enabled
The Space problem in HDD
Sajid Ali , Pakistan
I have a Celeron 1.7, Windows 2003 Server with Exchange server 2003 installed. Problem is, when my PC restarts, its root partition C: has around 400 MB free space. But, as I run any applications, the space gets filled and after some time, it is “0 Bytes”. I also checked for any Log or .tmp files, viruses, but everything seems OK. What could be the cause and what is the solution?
Windows 2003 Server requires a page file, which is nothing but a swap file located in the root partition- usually the C: drive, in order to function smoothly. The page file is utilized as virtual memory, an extension to the amount of physical RAM available in the system, when the amount of physical RAM is insufficient for certain applications. The size of the page file depends on the amount of RAM and generally ranges from 1 to 1.5 times that amount. You have mentioned at the start of Windows, the C: drive has around 400 MB free space. For Windows 2003 Server, this amount of space is too low and hence the page file expands and occupies all the available space after some time and you are left with almost no space on your C drive.
The situation is to move some of your data and applications to another drive to free up as much as possible on your C: drive. Once you do this, you will find Windows 2003 server perform much better.
What is my server type?
Helena bermi , Albania
I have a problem with Outlook Express. When I create an account, it asks for the type of the server. I don’t know what type my server is. What should I enter?
The incoming and outgoing mail server to be specified in Outlook Express depends on the mail provider and your Internet Service Provider [IPS]. While the incoming mail server depends on the mail service provider that has provided your e-mail ID, The Outgoing mail server depends on your IPS. Since you have not provided your e-mail ID, Xsol-lab advise you to contact your ISP for your outgoing server, which is also known as POP [Post Office Protocol] server and if your e-mail provider is different from your ISP, you will have to contact that provider for the incoming server which is also known as the SMTP [Simple Mail Transfer Protocol] server
I loss the quality into MPEG2 format [DVD]
John , Austria
I have a Pentium III 1GHz machine with 256MB RAM; But I can't play DVD video very well. But, when I convert it into some other format or capturing into MPEG2 format (DVD), a lot of frame loss occurs and quality becomes very poor.
Generally Pentium III can’t act as a MPEG2 decoder properly. That’s why when you convert any DVD video into some other format; it fails to play it properly.
To avoid this problem what you can do that switch to a Pentium IV machine of more than 1GHz or you can add a capture card to your hardware. A capture card has its own decoder, which can easily support different formats of DVD video files.
Laptop Computer

If you want to buy a laptop computer, and price around Rs 50000 to 60000.Then which will you prefer?
Within this budget you can have a lot of laptops from different brands. But, DELL and ACER laptops are perform well at this category of laptop. At the time of buying, check the following features are available or not:-
i) Intel Core2 Duo processor or AMD Turon X2 Dual core processor.
ii) At least 512 MB of RAM, but 1 GB is strongly preferable. Check the maximum RAM support capability and whether it supports DDR2 RAM. It will make your laptop future proof.
iii) Onboard graphics is must be 128 MB. Check, what chipset for onboard graphics is given. NVIDIA 6 or 7 series and ATI 1xxx XT are preferable.
iv) Check the DVD writer and the format of optical Medias, it supports.
v) At least 60 GB of hard disk and SATA HDD is recommended.
vi) Lastly the battery life.
I want to buy a PCI-E graphics card..plz suggest me
Jenifer , Belgium
I want to buy a PCI-E graphics card, which wills me to play today’s most of game in higher settings. My budget is Rs:5000.00.
I have P-IV with 1GB RAM and 160GB HDD.running Windows XP with service pack 2. please help me for taking this decission.
If you have an exiting graphics card, then wait for a few months until DirectX 10 based graphics cards will come to market and become common choice. NVIDIA 8XXX series are the only one now and they are priced very highly.
But, if you don’t have any graphics card right now rather then your onboard graphics then our suggestion is to buy a low end 7 series graphics card like 7300GT 256 MB, which will allow you to play today’s most of the game and save your money for a while. The price will be around Rs 3500.
